Let’s Collaborate! The Cyberinfrastructure Research Project Has Arrived

Time to check in yet again folks…

A cyberinfrastructure research project, which focuses on using IT to improve service delivery processes was recently revealed at IBM Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) in Edmonton, Alberta.  This project is not made possible without effective collaboration and networking between the Government of Alberta, IBM and the University of Alberta and each organizations’ commitment in working together to uncover new discoveries in the discipline of “services science.”  In regards to academia, the cyberinfrastructure research project will enable university students in the region to develop essential technical skills required for career success.

Doug Horner, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology explained, “Services science is the focal point of this research project and cyberinfrastructure is the high-tech equivalent of highways and pipelines – it is critical to the exchange of today’s hottest commodity, information.” Horner added, “This project has potential for commercial success and will help Alberta develop expertise for applications in nanotechnology, life sciences technology, and information technology, to support economic diversification.”

The research project is the beginning of a new collaboration agreement involving the University of Alberta and IBM in the emerging discipline of services science. It aligns very well with Alberta’s cyberinfrastructure investment. The university is committed to its growing interdisciplinary strength in services science.

This is an excellent example of how academia, goverment and enterprise collaborate and successfully network while sharing a vision to fuel innovation in the study of services science through fresh thinking, idea generation and research which will ultimately help the productivity of Alberta’s small and medium sized businesses.
